There were five of us, and we picked Legend of Dragons, the easy-medium room at Bamboozled Escape Games in Burnaby’s Old Orchard Shopping Centre. Here’s how it went, plus what families need to know before booking.

Our Experience

Each session gives you 50 minutes. Before you go into the room, there’s a small orientation room with a TV that explains the dos and don’ts. The main rule: solve things with your wits, not force.

Hints are unlimited. You press a button and a staff member comes in to give you one. We never used any, because the puzzles are well guided. Some escape rooms I’ve been to leave players to figure everything out on their own. At Bamboozled, projections appear at different stages to point you in the right direction.

The staff at the front were friendly, and we found it very fun. It’s also a really good way to build teamwork, whether you’re there with family, friends or co-workers.

The Four Rooms

All bookings are private, so you’ll never be put in a room with strangers. You’re also never locked in: Bamboozled says the entrance doors have no lock.

  • Legend of Dragons (Easy–Medium, 2–6 players): the one we played. Restore magic to an enchanted forest. A good first pick with kids.
  • Rainforest Ruins (Easy–Medium, 2–8 players): break the curse on a jungle temple. It takes the biggest groups.
  • Alien Odyssey (Medium–Hard, 2–6 players): a space rescue mission for more experienced teams.
  • Midnight Manor (Hard, 2–6 players): a haunted-mansion ghost hunt. Bamboozled warns of jump scares and strobe lighting, and kids 14 and under must play with an adult.

Is It OK for Kids?

Bamboozled says its games are designed for adults, but most kids around 8 can really take part when they play with family.

  • Kids 12 and under must have an adult player (19+).
  • Groups of 5 or more kids 12 and under need at least 2 adult players.
  • Teens 13+ can play without an adult, but staff may ask for one if the group gets stuck or isn’t respectful of the room.
  • Apart from Midnight Manor, the rooms aren’t meant to be scary and have no live actors, though there can be loud noises and lighting changes.

Prices and Ways to Save

The standard price is $35 per player + GST. Discounts on the official site:

  • Family Sundays: 20% off for multi-generation families, Sundays only.
  • Birthdays: play free on your birthday (ID required), and get 50% off 2 days before or after.
  • Students: $28 + GST, Monday to Thursday, with valid ID.
  • Fridays: $30 + GST each for groups of 5 or more.
  • Seniors 55+: $30 + GST.
  • Groups of 12+: $30 + GST each.

You pay when you play. There’s no fee to cancel a regular booking.

Parent Tips

  • Book ahead for weekends and holidays. Walk-ins are accepted, but slots fill up.
  • Arrive 10 minutes early. Everyone must be there at the start time, and late groups may lose game time.
  • Don’t be shy about hints. They’re unlimited, so press the button if the kids get stuck.
  • Birthday parties: there’s no party room, so plan cake somewhere else. Bookings of 3+ rooms need a 50% deposit.
  • Accessibility: rooms, halls and washrooms are wheelchair accessible, though a few puzzles sit up high.
