Hi there, kiddos! It’s Big Sis Aris! Today we’re answering an adorable question about greetings — why do Korean people like to ask “Have you eaten?” when they meet someone?
Have you guys ever seen a good friend and immediately wanted to know how their day was? In Korea, asking “Have you eaten?” is kind of like saying “How are you?” — it’s a warm and caring hello!
You know what? This habit started long ago when Korea went through times when food was hard to get. Being able to eat a full meal was something really special. So asking someone if they had eaten was a way of saying, “I hope you’re doing okay” or “I care about you” — just like how you’d worry if your best friend got hungry!
Here’s a cute secret — when Korean people ask this, they’re also saying, “I’d love to share food with you!” They love enjoying meals together. It’s just like when you get a piece of candy and instantly think, “I want to share this with my friend!”
If you ever hear this greeting, you don’t need to explain your whole meal. Just smiling and saying, “Yes, I’ve eaten,” is enough. And wouldn’t your heart feel warm if someone cared enough to ask if you’d eaten?
So this special greeting is like a little candy wrapped in kindness — full of warmth and caring between people!
Remember, kiddos — next time a Korean friend asks you this, you can happily answer back, or even try using it to show your care for someone. And if you discover other fun greeting traditions from different countries, tell Big Sis Aris — let’s be little culture-sharing angels together! ding!
