Hi there, kiddos! It’s Big Sis Aris! Today we’re answering a super funny question — why is a turkey called “Turkey” in English? 🦃🌍
You know what’s really interesting? A turkey is a bird, but also a country! How did their names get all mixed up like that? 🤔
Have you guys ever played the “telephone game,” where a message gets passed around and changes a little every time? Well, hundreds of years ago, European explorers made the same kind of mix-up — but with a bird! whoops!
More than 500 years ago, merchants in Europe were importing a bird called a guinea fowl from the country of Turkey. Later, when explorers discovered turkeys in America, they thought those big birds are the guinea fowl from Turkey. So they just called them “Turkey” — even though they actually came from America, not Turkey!
And here’s a super funny secret — people in Turkey call the turkey birds “Hindi,”, which means India, because Christopher Columbus thought he had landed in India! 😂 Meanwhile, people in India call it “”Peru pakshi,” which means Peru Bird, and in France they call it “Dinde” for female turkey and “Dindon” for male turkey, which means “Chicken from India” It’s like a giant game of “name mix-up” going all around the world!
Different countries gave the turkey names that reminded them of faraway places — kind of like a world puzzle, where everyone tried to connect the new bird to something they already knew. 🌎✨
If those explorers hadn’t made that mistake, the turkey might have a totally different name today! Isn’t that a funny and amazing story from history?
So the word “turkey” for this bird is really just a big, happy mix-up — a little mistake that turned into a name we’ve used for over 500 years!
Remember, kiddos — next time you eat a yummy turkey dinner, tell your family this cool story! And if you discover another fun fact about how animals got their names, be sure to tell Big Sis Aris — let’s be name detectives together! gobble gobble! 🦃💬
