Hi there, kiddos! It’s Big Sis Aris! Today we’re answering a magical New Year’s question — why do people in Spain eat 12 grapes right at midnight?

Have you guys ever played a game where you count along with sounds? Imagine this — when the New Year’s clock goes dong… dong… twelve times, people in Spain start munching grapes like tiny hamsters — chomp chomp chomp! — trying to finish all 12 before the last bell!

You know what? This tradition is like a wish-making spell! Each grape stands for one month of the new year — from January all the way to December. If you can eat all 12 grapes in time with the chimes, people say your whole year will be sweet, lucky, and full of good surprises!

Here’s a fun secret — the tradition started in a super silly way! A long, long time ago, Spain had a year where farmers grew too many grapes. There were so many that they didn’t know what to do with them! So clever farmers turned them into “wish grapes,” and soon the whole country started joining in.

And guess what? On New Year’s Eve, families gather around the TV with their grapes ready. When the bell starts ringing, everyone goes pop pop pop! trying to eat as fast as they can. You’ll see people with cheeks puffed up like balloons — and everyone laughing their heads off!

Even if you don’t finish in time, it’s still super fun — just like losing a game and laughing as you try again!

So this special tradition is like starting the year with 12 magical wishes, making New Year’s Eve full of giggles and excitement!
