Hi there, kiddos! It’s Big Sis Aris! Today we’re answering a fun little secret about hand gestures — why is the OK sign considered rude in Brazil?

Have you guys ever made the “OK” sign to tell someone everything is fine? Well, in different countries, the same hand gesture can magically mean something totally different!

You know what? In Brazil, the OK gesture is actually seen as impolite. The circle shape made by your fingers looks like a symbol with a negative meaning there. It’s kind of like how sticking your tongue out and saying “bleh bleh bleh” can be cheeky for us — but in Brazil, the OK sign feels offensive to people!

Here’s a little secret — it’s not just Brazil! Some places in South America also avoid this gesture. Just like how the same toy can be played differently in different places, hand signs can have all kinds of meanings depending on the culture!

And guess what? If Brazilians want to show approval or say “Great job!”, they raise their thumbs up . Just like how we say “Nice!” or “Awesome!”, this gesture means “Well done!” or “That’s great!” in Brazil!

If you accidentally used the OK sign in Brazil, people might look surprised or uncomfortable. And imagine if someone used a rude gesture toward you — you’d feel upset too, right?
